Definitions and Thoughts on Open Pedagogy

Definitions:

Pedagogy is the art of teaching. It's the methods, practices, and theories of teaching, including instructional strategies, learning theories, and the overall educational approach used to guide student learning.

Open in education terms, refers to the freedom of access, reuse, revision, remixing, and redistribution of educational materials and practices. It signifies transparency, collaboration, and a departure from restrictive models.

Open pedagogy is a pedagogical approach that prioritizes student agency, collaboration, and the creation of public, openly licensed artifacts. It treats education as a learner-driven process, emphasizes community and connection, and links academic work to the wider public. This approach often leverages open educational resources and practices, fundamentally shifting the focus from technological infrastructure and content to the people involved in learning and the architecture of their educational experiences.

Thoughts:

Open pedagogy is something I have sprinkled into my classroom. I have used it a bit when it comes to student's creating their own rubrics and having a choice and voice in what they are learning. However, it is not a regular thing that I do. I think this is something that I could implement a lot more into my classroom as I feel this approach would benefit many if not all students in a science classroom. However, from what I am hearing through coworkers it seems like my district is moving towards giving us curriculum where we are not as autonomous in the decisions we are making in our classrooms. I could be wrong though and there may still be some wiggle room, where I could take the foundation they give us and weave this approach into what we are given.
